Gentle Reminder

Heyy you!! Yes you reading this… you have gotten to the end of October. Congratulations!! I hope it was not too hard on you…

I’m seated here on my bed typing, and I can’t shut this nudging feeling to put down this gentle reminders not only for you but for me too. You see, I’m currently not having a very relaxed mind, and that is partly because I feel like everybody in the world needs me… and not in a good way. More like in a way that stretches you and really drains you as it were. Technically it shouldn’t bother me, but it’s almost like I should switch off my phone and almost take a communication cleanse (which I will eventually, right now they may be some pressing matters preventing me from doing so)

You are enough… yes you are enough… you actually need to believe this. Sometimes in a quest to make a couple of people happy, you forget that you are actually more than enough. You are smart, you are beautiful and you are unique which is your greatest asset.

You will always be too much of something to someone, and it is not necessarily a bad thing, make peace with that. Everyone definitely has an opinion, and is entitled to one just as much as you are entitled to the choice of whether to take it or not.

You need time for yourself as well… to unwind, to release and to recharge. Nobody feeds fro am empty source, and in order for you to be as awesome and as effective as you ought, you need to take time off. That spa, that gym, that forest or that silent retreat, just for you. Don’t allow yourself to be drained by family or friends or your relationships… take time off.

Learn to say NO (note to self). Know when you can’t do it, it is okay to be tired or to have too much to do. It is okay not to want to see people and to recoil and cocoon and think about life.

SMILE often… even if it is the smile after slaying your hair and you are pouting and goofing on the mirror. Try and build joy from within and resist the urge to lapse into negativity. Keep up positive vibes and cut off negative influence.

DREAM big… it is okay to do so… PUSH yourself to achieve the dreams you have set… overcome the urge to be complacent and stay CONSISTENT and PERSISTENT!!

PRAY!!! (says prayer) talk to HIM, it is so therapeutic and it helps a lot!! HE is the real MvP trust me!!

Most of all, try each and everyday to love and appreciate who you are, and what you do to make the world a better place for someone.

Love and love

Nyake.

2 smoothie ideas + vegan challenge update

Hey lovelies happy Friday… we haven’t cooked on here this month, which is quite weird considering that we are on a vegan challenge. I am really sorry about that, having to blog without a camera is a bit of hard work, and my internet connection does not seem to be helping much. End of rant! About the challenge… we are doing quite well, apart from my psyche levels going down and me grabbing a cake sometime on day four-five there, we are still going strong. I haven’t done a successful workout just yet though. I have been doing my teas a lot more, and also trying to improve my water game as well.

Anyway, a great way to incorporate fruit into your diet apart from eating it (which by the way is the best way) is to Smoothie it out. This is because you get to juice it as it were without losing the fiber part of it. Normal juice is actually not as healthy as we may suppose it is because we sieve out all the fiber thus stripping the fruit of its amazing benefits as far as supplying body sugar is concerned. Read that here.

Smoothies are also a great pre-workout grab!!! Here are two of my absolutely favorite smoothies.

MANGO Smoothie

What you need

  • Chopped mango

  • ½ cup of water

  • Ice cubes

What to do

  • Put the ingredients in a blender and blend

  • It is important that you do not dilute the mango because we don’t want to add sugar to our juice and we also want it to remain thick

  • You can add milk of your choice (soy, almond etc). I just don’t like the sound of milk in my fruit.

BANANA-PINEAPPLE smoothie

What you need

  • 1 banana sliced

  • Chopped pineapple

  • ½ cup water

  • Ice cubes

What to do

  • You may freeze the banana before hand

  • Mix the ingredients in a blender and blend away

The banana Smoothie is very very filling by the way. This is such an awesome way to give your body good vibes in the morning!!

Adding Chia seeds or any seed to your Smoothie definitely adds more nutrients to your Smoothie. Organic vegan protein powder is also welcome.

Ever tried smoothies? I would love to know.

Sunshine all the way,

Nyake.

Natural hair Journey on a budget!!

Hey loves…

Contrary to many sentiments, your natural hair journey doesn’t have to break your bank. Of course there is that phase of feeling that every product on the shelf should be tried. This though is not the main focus of this post. I thought I would share some product combinations (specifically shampoo and conditioner) that would help you transition into natural hair care smoothly. The shampoos in this post have sulphates, which means if you opt to use them, pre-pooing is crucial. Also I am assuming that the shampoos will be used once in a month while the rest of the washes will be co-washes. In my journey, I haven’t absolutely discarded sulphate shampoos because they cleanse really well and I sometimes use silicones in my hair…which are best removed by sulfates in shampoos.

The conditioners in this post are silicone free which is a plus, apart from one. The prices indicated are those of retailing stores and this could change anytime.

  • Mikalla low sulphate shampoo and honey butter conditioner Ksh 250-300

I love the scents of both products, I however particularly love the consistency of the conditioner. I bought both at Bestlady cosmetics on River road Nairobi. The shampoo retails at kshs 120-140 and the conditioner retails for 130-150. This is a Kenyan brand too which is super cool. So you could as well start here. They also have a leave in conditioner that is fairly good!! Costs about kshs 250

  • Farmasi exotic shampoo and Tutti Frutti balsam conditioner Ksh 400

Of course the scents are strong and very fruity. Both the shampoo and conditioner cost Kshs 200. They work really well. One wash with the shampoo is sufficient, if you use to much it can be very stripping. The conditioner is also an amazing base for your DIY deep conditioning recipes. These can be found in Nakumatt supermarkets.

  • Alberto balsam shampoo and conditioner Ksh 450

I did a review of the products already that you can read here. Each costs kshs 225 in Nakumatt supermarkets.

  • Suave Naturals coconut shampoo and conditioners Kshs 550

These are my personal favourite because the scents are not that strong but really mild and cozy. The shampoo is very gentle and lathers really well and the conditioners are thick and have a lovely consistency. Each product retails at kshs 275 in Nakumatt supermarket. Chandarana supermarkets also have it. They have been kind of out of stock for a while now though!

Have you used any of these? What products do you use that are cheap?

Skin Care:- tips and tricks + routine

Hello people, happy hump day! Hope your week is cool so far. I have been having connection challenges and also device challenges which has made it quite difficult to post as often as I would have liked. That said, we are here so we can as well have a little skin care session today. Of course you have heard that your skin is the largest organ in your body a million and one times before. This makes it very crucial to our being because lots of stuff that get into our bodies will pas through the skin. (part of the reason relaxers are a no-no) thus taking care of our skin is absolutely important.

Apart from being a very relaxing habit, going to the spa is very beneficial for detoxing to our bodies through the skin! (yes I just gave you one more reason to be vain lol). Since spas can be super expensive for us to go (or go as often as we like) I shared with you my pampering routine that I do at home that has the benefits of a sps #homespa. Also baths can be a super excellent way to achieve this detoxing, especially herb infused baths (like Epsom salt baths), but I digress.

So today we are all about our facial skin health. I must also state that I am no licensed cosmetologist or professional, and I simply present what I believe in, read about and have experienced and has worked for me. I have what could be classified as an oily skin and resultantly is very acne prone. I have had acne since I was 9 years old and still battle with break outs every now and then. So yeah, no flawless skin, in fact I have no recollection whatsoever of flawless skin in my life ever.

Anyway, so here is the skin regimen that has worked for me so far.

EVERY MORNING:

  • Wash face with either black soap you can get it here/ bebble wash gel (I got this in Nakumatt on sale, it is a mild baby wash)

  • Pat face dry with tissue or paper towel. ( TIP 1: If you have acne prone skin, towels may serve to transfer germs back to your face so a disposable towel works better)

  • Apply moisturiser. (TIP 2: Aloe Vera gel is a great moisturiser for acne prone skin, it soothes the skin and has great healing properties. It also is for from chemicals which is a plus for your system!! Win!!)

  • Seal in the moisture. (TIP 3: Shea butter is a great alternative to Vaseline (and petroleum products. It also has great healing properties for the acne scars and wounds. It isn’t as greasy by the way!)

And voila, you can walk out the door. If you are a makeup person though, your make up starts here. Ps: read very carefully hat you put on your face, some really harmful ingredients like parabens are in this products and may prove detrimental to your health. If you don’t know why parabens are a problem, Google is your best friend! Try as much as possible to opt for organic products!

EVERY NIGHT:

  • Cleanse your face/ remove make up. I use a cleanser (that has parabens, because I didn’t know until recently). The streets of Nairobi are so dusty and smoky, you just want to cleanse your face

  • Wash face as you did in the morning.

  • Every other night I like to gently exfoliate my skin using my DIY salt scrub/mask

  • Pat face dry with a paper towel.

  • Moisturise with Aloe Vera gel.

  • Pat some tea tree on problematic spots. (TIP 4: Tea tree is a natural astringent and antibacterial oil. It is excellent for fungal infections and acne among others. You may want to dilute it with a carrier oil.)

  • Seal in the moisture with Shea butter.

EVERY WEEK:

  • Change pillowcase. (TIP 5: the pillowcase harbours oils and gulk from your face. Changing it as often means you don’t pick up dirt from it )

  • Steam face and have a face spa (TIP 6: Steaming the face opens up the pores of the skin and melts any oils that may be stuck in the pores. It also enables the skin to absorb treatments that you apply on your skin thereafter.)

I will share my face spa in another post, but until then let’s take care of our skin.

Also how does your skin care routine look like? I would love to know.

Love and love

Nyake.
