Happy Friday ladies and gents, hope this week was kind to you. (who else feels like ladies and gents describes restrooms?) Life has been kind to me too… a couple of lessons here and there. So yesterday was supposed to be my third hair anniversary and honestly my hair has been doing well…. Except I decided to straighten it. All was going well until my mother insisted that my hair was not getting straight
and I decided to up my heat game. That was the beginning of all my misery to date lol. This could easily turn into a sob story, just that we had to pick our pieces… and today we share four tips to manage damaged hair….

- Do a protein treatment
Your hair is made of keratin which is a protein. There was this thing we learnt in biology about protein being destroyed by heat, remember? So we do a protein treatment to temporarily fill the the gaps in our strands and make the hair stronger again. This though as I have said is a temporary measure that allows you to save your hair for just a little bit. When using a protein treatment, you must make sure iyt contain a hydrolyzed protein. This means that the protein is broken down to become small enough to absorb into your hair strand and do what it needs to do. Remember that some people are sensitive to protein, so it is always a good idea to do a patch test first.
I recommend two treatments and this is because they reconstructor treatments and have a good protein-moisture balance. These are the Venus Keraflex protein treatment and the ApHogee 2 minute reconstructor treatment.
- Trim
This is the second thing you want to do after trying to salvage your hair with a protein treatment. What I do is just dust off the damaged ends in piece meal until the damage is over. A good trimming or dusting tip is to use scissors that are exclusively for trimming your hair and nothing else. I talked about trimming here.
- Forgive yourself
Knowing that you damaged your hair personally, or let someone do it after you have worked so hard for it, is a very bitter pill to swallow. So you need to remember that, it is just hair and it will definitely grow. You nned to let go of all the pain that you have and focus on good hair practices to continue growing out your hair. Remember that all mistakes should be stepping stones for a better journey.
- Healing treatments
If you feel like being extra to say sorry to your hair, you can embrace some healing treatments that claim to aid in better, longer and thicker hair, I personally do an onion treatment about once to twice a month to aid in blood circulation to my scalp and give my scalp all the nourishment it requires. I also use a herbal infusion oil mixture on my scalp for some added health.
